And now an important plea from ArchHallJr (the capper, not the actor). Apologies if you’ve already heard it, but Arch has made a great start of the CapperWiki, and now he needs somebody to step up and help keep it serving the community – Gerson

Folks,

By now most of you have noticed that I cannot give the wiki the time it deserves to be maintained, developed and otherwise. I am asking that someone within the capping community take over the responsibility of controlling and maintaining the wiki. It is possible that the job could be split into two parts. Firstly, the aforementioned controlling and maintaining the site. Second, someone who develops the site. However, it is possible the two jobs can go to the same person. I will continue to pay for the hosting and domain name. I have no problem with this as this community has given me so much over the years, it is the least I can do. But whomever takes over will have final say on decisions pertaining to all things wiki. Regardless of me paying the bills, I will not be a ‘shadow’ owner, I am giving up complete control. I will stay on as a ‘consultant’ and help with any issues that may crop up as best I can. Gerson has also offered to help in a limited capacity as well. I would ask that whoever is interested have a decent tech background. You don’t need to be super sysadmin or an ubercoder, but more than a modicum of technical expertise is kind of required to do this and do it right. My guess is that there are several people within the group that fit this description. The question is do you want the responsibility? If you do, please be sure. In the words of the immortal Mayor Chapstick, no givesies-backsies! ;)

I apologize to you all for not giving the site the attention it needs but my life in the real world is not compatible with maintaining and/or developing the wiki at this time. Heck, it hasn’t been for some time. I think you all know that. It is my sincere hope that this decision will make the wiki a better place to visit and source of enjoyment for everyone.

If you are interested, contact me via this handy form and know that I will help with the transition and get you where you need to be to be the full on site admin for the wiki. You won’t be stepping into it alone. Thank you for your time

– Arch

In the interest of providing my readers a broader perspective, giving voice to diverse views, saving myself some work, and hopefully increasing this site’s exposure, from time to time I will offer guest bloggers a chance to speak.Today’s guest is long time Nite Shift capper Jazzsoda. In his spare time, he can be found bowling, shooting, clipping his toenails and spitting. In addition to writing for The Commune, Mr. Soda maintains the creatively named Jazzoda’s Caption Gallery which he will now go on about. Take it way, Jazz.

Ever wonder what it’s like to run a cap gallery? To peek behind the curtain and catch a glimpse of the Wizard, whizzing away and yelling at you to close the goddamned curtain, this stall is occupied? Well now, thanks to the magic of Gerson’s Blog-Pimping program…You Can.

Running a cap gallery is so fun I could poop, and often do. You get to spend your entire week pouring through thousands of caps the authors themselves didn’t give a second thought to, stoically holding extreme caption burn-out at bay as you plow through page after page of crap you’ve seen before. Usually, by about page 70, one of two things happens:

Either you’re so burnt out that nothing is funny at all, or else you’re so burnt out that absolutely everything is insanely hilarious, especially the word “poop.” Since this usually corresponds to the part of the cap session that took place around 5am, you were likely in a similar mindset while capping, and so the gallery is generously overflowing with references to hilarious poop. All is well.

Having the entire cap session archived is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing, because while you’re capping you don’t even have to read anyone else’s caps, and can instead conserve your late-night energy for hammering away at some half-funny idea you had in the elevator, relentlessly, cap after cap, until others join in and make it a thread just to get you to give it a goddamned rest already. It’s also a blessing since you can take your time pondering caps you didn’t “get” the first time around, and realizing that for half the ones you thought you got, they were actually talking about something completely different and you’re a dipshit.

The curse comes when at the end of a cap session, instead of a neat little file of favorites you’re ready to upload to your gallery, you’ve got a goddamned mountain of caps it’s going to take you all week to wade through, trying to ignore the handles so you can be fair and impartial, then you finally get to the end and realize you didn’t choose anything from your friend so-and-so, even though they’re really funny and what the hell were you thinking? So you have to go back and find something funny they did. And then you look and realize all but three of the caps you saved were your own, and how in the hell did that happen again? It’s not that you think you’re so funny, it’s just that… well, you wouldn’t have MADE those caps if you didn’t like them in the first place, plus of course you see all of your own caps and less-than-all of everyone else’s, and nobody else seems to think midgets are as funny as you do. So it’s back to the drawing board, and your boss is asking you if maybe you could squeeze in a TPS report around all your gallery updating and you say maybe next week.

So, if these are the gripes, you ask, then what are the perks? Ah, the perks. Chicks! Chicks dig cap galleries! Okay, that’s not precisely true. Geeks dig cap galleries, and as far as I can tell chicks dig Ricky Martin. Not sure what’s up with that. But the real perk comes at the end of the week, from knowing that a lot of really funny and cool people are checking out your gallery, and cursing you for not saving more of their caps. You’re welcome.

In the interest of providing my readers a broader perspective, giving voice to diverse views, saving myself some work, and hopefully increasing this site’s exposure, from time to time I will offer guest bloggers a chance to speak. Our first guest is long time capper Xigeous. Mr. Eous was the star and auteur of Count Xigeous’ Halloween Bloodbath and maintains the Cappers Reverse Locational Index. His hobbies include plumbing, macrame and ballroom walking. Take it way, Xig.

Nothing in this cyber world is more exciting than the Cappernatorial election. Except for Capping. And a few other things.

It all started with Lanzman and his revitalization plans for the Capper eGroup.

Thanks to Lanzman, many old members have returned. Hey, I returned and no one here is older than me. So that proves it.

Then Daleman made his occasional post to let us all know how boring we were. (Not digging the Daleman. Just reporting the news. But not all the news. Just the dirt.)

Well, nobody wants to bore Daleman less than I so I took the bull by the horns (or, I should say, “took the alleged bull” because the truth of it all was uncertain) and wrote a “How can we stop boring Daleman” poll.

When three people voted for ELECT A NEW MAYOR our course was clear. (The previously elected Mayor Soozcat is still M.I.A.)

With no outline for the Mayor’s powers, duties, or term (because that’s the way we cappers do things), I appointed myself election Moderator and found five fine candidates who were willing to brave the grueling questions, answers, and debates of a Cappernatorial Election.

Gray Zombie, Helen Servo, PrezGAR, Scypha, and The Diva took the plunge, each taking turns to express their own intelligent opinions on the future of capping, their own degrees of capper understanding and wisdom.

All candidates received votes but the Distinguished Gray Zombie took the election with a whopping 50% of capper egroup support.

In my opinion, Mayor Zombie triumphed by exhibiting a perfect balance of humor and insight. He knew when to snap off a funny answer, when to give a convincing expression of love and support for the group.

He has already begun his term strongly by bringing many new members to the group.

Science bless Mayor Zombie.

Please enjoy his Inauguration music which was written expressly for this important event.

Hope you like banjo.
